Carolyn & Matt - 8 December 2012

A week before the 8th December 2012, I got an email from the beautiful Carolyn who just casually announced that she was getting married to Matt on Saturday and was going to have a picnic wedding... I just couldn't believe my eyes when I read it!

I knew she was a sweetheart already but it was such an amazing surprise to hear how she would love to have some of our treats to be a part of her big day - namely our egg free, vegan apple crumble cupcakes.  "OF COURSE I will make them for you!  Are you kidding?! I'm so honoured your even thought to have me play a little part in your big day!"

I've written about Carolyn before - the first time she found us she ordered a box of 5 apple crumble cupcakes for delivery to her place.  The beautiful memory that most strikes me everytime she gets in contact with me is when she saw me arrive she skipped towards me in excitement with her dog Columbo.  It's a memory that always makes me smile - because it encapsulates what a beautiful soul she is.

When she contacted me - I really couldn't believe my luck - another bride with such a refreshing attitude and such kindness in her heart.  It was obvious all she was thinking about was making it easier for me - which is beyond generous!

So on the Friday I went over to deliver her wedding treats - including these gingerbread hearts with their names emblazoned on there.  I got a big hug, met her wonderful sister, had a wonderful chat, saw the AMAZING wedding dress and wished her all the very very best on her big day.

Later on I got a message from Carolyn saying that she got her nails done and the colour happen to match the pink on the gingerbread!  I have to admit I quietly (okay, not so quietly) squealed with delight!

The next day while I was baking away - my thoughts drifted towards Carolyn & Matt - I wondered whether they were getting married right that very second - and the thought made my heart sing!  And then all of the sudden my phone beeped and I checked my messages - only to find a seriously thoughtful gift from Carolyn & Matt.  A photo of them chomping away at the gingerbread I made for them!!  What a gift!  How on earth did they manage to be so thoughtful just before they were about the get married?!  Most couples would be completely consumed by their big day... I truly couldn't believe it - I was so touched.  I did a little dance because as you can see - the photo above is so precious and beautiful!  I will treasure it always...

So Carolyn & Matt - THANK YOU for having me be a part of your special day and CONGRATULATIONS on getting MARRIED!!!!!!!! Yaaaayyyyyyyyyyy!!!!

Lots of love xo

Maria & Adam - 20th October 2012

There are times in your life when you can't believe how blessed and lucky you are.  Meeting Maria for the first time at the Northside Produce Market at our very first market was a delight - and she has since then become a very important part of the Miss Lulu family - including being the very first bride to come through our doors (and what a perfect bride she turned out to be!)

Knowing that a wedding is one of the biggest occasions in a person's life - I was extremely concerned about doing this for her and her lovely hubby Adam - the thought of ruining their wedding struck terror into my heart!  So - I actually tried to send her elsewhere - but the beautiful Maria persisted and I distinctly remember her telling me "no pressure - just one of those 'eat me' cakes you make would be great"... Essentially - she was trying to tell me that anything would be perfect - and I defy anyone to show me a more gracious and giving bride.

So as the months passed - she would visit each month at the market and we all got to know her - and it was very apparent even from the beginning that she was a very special, gorgeous soul. A few months later I got to meet her now husband Adam - who was equally as kind and gracious.  Watching them together is so beautiful - they're one of those couples where you know there is such pure love and adoration for each other.  It reminded me of my own hubby and our wedding day - and the wedding was even more special as it was 3 days before my own wedding anniversary.

So as the day approached and given this was my first time for a wedding - I did a practice run with the "Queen of Hearts" cake stand her lovely friend Ann-Marie discovered for her and sent her a picture.  And she wrote:
"OH MY GOD! I mean this from the bottom of my heart... they are AMAZING!!!!!!  AMAZING! I can’t believe you! I was more than happy with the original ‘eat me’ design. You honestly didn’t need to go to this much trouble! I feel like crying! I just love them. They are too pretty to eat!"

I felt like crying myself when I read her reply!  There is nothing more wonderful than being able to exceed the expectations of someone who doesn't ask for much at all - but deserves so much more because of their humility and kindness.

Once the wedding came around - I sat down to decorate it all and my heart was full of joy and fear all at once! And on top of all of that - it was also market day!  So I was baking for everyone!!!  Just when I was wondering if I was going to survive Maria's sweet dad came by to introduce himself at the market - and his pride for his daughter was beaming all over the place!  It was so heartwarming and the sun began to shine even brighter - nothing could stop me from smiling even though I was exhausted.

So as I walked through the magical Luna Park to the venue with Mr Lulu - and passed over the cake & 100's of cupcakes - my heart was shining at the thought that Maria and Adam were getting married at that very moment. Walking away hand in hand with Mr Lulu - knowing that we had played a part in someone else's special day was a big blessing indeed.

I then proceeded to fall onto the couch and went into the deepest slumber!

The next day - the new Mrs Montana took the time to write me this message:

"Dear Miss Lulu, I can't thank you enough for the absolutely amazing effort you went to on Saturday. They were the most amazing cupcakes ever. People actually told me they were the best cupcakes they had ever tried and I swear people said our wedding display was the most beautiful one they had ever seen. I can't thank you enough. I will never forget the effort you went to for us. It was the icing on the cake!!! Hee Hee! Love in tonnes, Mr and Mrs Montana xxxxx"

I am still thanking my lucky stars that she came along and gave me this chance to play and use my imagination - the freedom she gave me was an incredible gift.

Thank you so much Maria & Adam - for letting me be a part of your wedding celebrations x  CONGRATULATIONS ON BECOMING HUSBAND & WIFE!!!

With lots of love xo

Christmas Cake

There are some Christmas traditions that I don't really want to give up - one of these traditions is having a dense slice of boozy Christmas fruit cake smothered with ice cream or custard...  So when my sensitive tummy denied me this - Christmas never really seemed the same anymore.  Inevitably - I was led to make this Christmas cake - and upon testing a successful version it threw me back to memories of Christmas past... and you couldn't wipe the grin off my face!

So here is our traditional Christmas cake - gluten free, dairy free, soy free and yeast free.

It's available now in two sizes - you can order online or if you want to pick one of these up at the Northside Produce Market on the 15th December please pop us an email at orders@misslulus.com.au

Lots of love as always,
Miss Lulu xo

I love my dad so much!

I love my dad so much!  I just had a big laugh out loud moment...

When I sent my dad this pic - he wrote back and said:

"If all men were like your cupcakes, there will be no war forever!"

He always manages to make me laugh - even when there is nothing funny at all!

Tomorrow morning at the Northside Produce Market we'll be selling these moustached fellows to raise money for Movember - these are in honour of my hubby, my dad and my dad-in-law.

Egg Free & Vegan Tummies Rejoice!

Ever since I posted a photo on Instagram of our chocolate donuts (once again a testament to the power of social media!) Vegan Food Share - an instagram profile that features vegan pictures from around the world - approached me to see if we would be interested in being featured.  Once we agreed - our instagram followers grew exponentially - and I was delighted to see how many hungry, appreciative vegans there are out in the world!

To be honest - the reason why I made things without egg was to accommodate the sensitive tummies out there that can't tolerate it - so it didn't even occur to me that vegans would be interested!  But interested they have been - and I've become even more determined to build on our menu and the next thing I've been trying to conquer is an egg free, vegan vanilla cake.

But try after try - I couldn't quite get it right.

Enter one of my gorgeous customers, Carolyn.  Her favourite treat has always been the apple crumble cupcake and I still remember the first time I delivered them to her - she skipped towards me with excitement with her adorable puppy Columbo - it was a sight that was so sweet and beautiful.  And since then - I've seen her come by and without fail it's always been the apple crumble cupcake.

So when she wrote to me and told me she had become vegan as well and whether she could get a vegan apple crumble cake for her birthday - I swung into action and realised I had to tackle this recipe once and for all and conquer it!

I warned her that it may fail and she very diplomatically said she'd be happy with just the apple pie filling, the dairy free cream and the crumble.  So I made sure I had a lovely bowl on hand in case disaster struck.

All I can say is thank goodness for her willingness to be my test subject!

And did it work?  The picture of the above is the result - which is all well and good - but what did it taste like?  Here is the amazing response from Carolyn which she texted to me 20 minutes after I left:

"I can give you feedback already. You nailed it!! The texture & density is so nice and moist. I think I even prefer this to your normal version of this cake! Absolutely delicious Lulu! I've just had a 2nd piece & stand by what I said above. Your apple pie like filling, cream, and crumble on top is divine. You are a star xoxo With love from your very satisfied test subject : ) Carolyn"

So now - I'm very very happy to announce that ALL of our cupcake flavours & cakes are available by special order for all of my egg free, vegan friends.  All you have to do when ordering online (click here to order now!) is choose the egg free/vegan option or if you want a customised cake - just give me a call xo  And if we're popping up somewhere - just email through to me at orders@misslulus.com.au and I'll fire up the oven for your own little beauties x

With lots of love xo

Two Vegan Girls ♥ Banana Loaf

I was recently approached by a beautiful customer via twitter for one dozen cinnamon donuts.  It still amazes me how the word spreads via twitter, facebook, instagram - social media is incredible... Anyway because of my foray into these mediums there has been alot of vegan love & encouragement out there for Miss Lulu's which has completely blown me away.

On that occasion - I remember distinctly how devoted her husband was - and he turned up to the market with a friendly smile on his face and you could clearly see he adored her.  I really love meeting people who are picking up goodies for their loved one - it makes me feel like the world is a better place with people like that around.  Anyway - because of that I couldn't resist sending him home with a mini banana loaf...

On the next occasion when we were popping up - she asked me to make her a custom large version of our banana loaf.

And the result is that she took this amazing photo and kindly let me publish it here for you all to see.  Not only is she lovely - but she's a great photographer too!

Anyway - she also happens to be on facebook too - under the name Two Vegan Girls - one girl from Sydney and one from Melbourne.  And the review for our banana loaf was completely overwhelming in its generosity - I am blessing my lucky stars right now.

This is what she said:

"One of the best things about being vegan is that you don't need to miss out on things that you enjoyed before going vegan - you just enjoy a slightly different version. Today I was lucky enough to have banana bread made by the incredibly talented Miss Lulu's Dessert Parlour in Sydney.

This banana bread is definitely one of the best that I've ever had. It was so delicious! :)

In addition to vegan treats, Miss Lulu specialises in gluten free, yeast free, soy free goods.

Thank you, Miss Lulu for bringing such delicious food to Sydney! V xx"

One of the best that I've ever had...  You can't get better than that...

All I can say is WOW and THANK YOU SO SO SO VERY MUCH xo

Happy 75th Birthday Lolo Rene!

I always get these amazing calls from loved ones who really care about including everyone in the family when it comes to a great celebration.

Case in point - the beautiful Joy called and emailed me to ask about cupcakes for her dad's 75th birthday.  But her thoughts were also with her nephew who had multiple allergies and has normally missed out on the festivities.  This is what I call love.  Someone that gives enough of their time to research so that she can see her nephew enjoy treats with everyone else is a special person.

Sensitive tummies are so lucky to have people like Joy who care about bringing everyone together  - I'm one of those people who has many tummies of steel that care about making me happy - and I am constantly blessing my lucky stars that they still love me despite these issues.  But they don't just love me - they strive to make me feel included and loved.  This is what Joy did for her nephew today.

I'm so encouraged when I hear stories like Joy's - and delivering this to her today completely made my day and was the absolute highlight!

Happy 75th Birthday Lolo Rene! :)

Lots of love xo

Ava's 6th Birthday

Little Ava is an inspiration to us all.

On her 6th birthday - she wrote a letter to everyone invited to her birthday party and asked that rather than buying her presents would her guests help her raise money for The Wayside Chapel instead.  I have yet to meet a little youngster with such an awareness and such a spirit of generosity.  Her mother is obviously doing an amazing job!

I was lucky enough to play a part in the birthday festivities for Ava this year.

First - I made a special trip to her school to deliver customised individual choc chip cookies adorned with the name of each classmate, all wrapped in cellophane and tied with a sweet ribbon!

Then on her Madagascar themed birthday party that weekend – 100 rainbow cupcakes were on the agenda!

Everything I made for Ava was gluten free, dairy free, yeast free, egg free and vegan – to cater for everyone in her class so that nobody missed out.

It was an honour to do this for this special young lady.

And here is the beautiful letter she wrote to everyone invited to her party - it honestly gives me faith in our future.  I've just learnt a great lesson from a 6 year old! I wonder what else she will do for the world as she grows up - I can't wait to find out!

We love you Ava!

Lots of love from Miss Lulu xo

Malachi

On Saturday I met a very special boy called Malachi who has a sensitive tummy just like me - but with a few extra no-no's like seafood, nuts and egg.

His mum communicated before they came along and we had a great chat about what he could and couldn't eat - quite simply, she is just the most devoted and beautiful mother.

The highlight of my day was seeing the wonder in his eyes when I opened his own special box of treats.

This is why I love my job!

His mum sent me this photo and wrote
"I'm so glad I found you! It's wonderful you can bring a bit of magic into his life. I'm really grateful".

And with that - a tear of happiness and a feeling that I made the right choice to start this whole crazy adventure.

Thank you Malachi!

Maria & Adam are getting married!

I have to apologise to my blog readers - I have completely neglected my blog and have only been updating my facebook, twitter & instagram!   I was sucked into the social media ether - it's the instant feedback that is so enticing and one thing I only just realised is that people are often checking my blog too!  So may I offer huge apologies - Miss Lulu is here and back to share all her adventures more regularly!

Since I last spoke - there have been so many lovely baking stories I've had the privilege of being a part of - so over the next few weeks I'll be talking about them one by one :)

This week for example - is going to be a massive week for Maria & Adam - who are getting married this Saturday!  Hooray!  When I met Maria for the first time I was taken by her genuine kindness and sincerity.  Once I met her lovely hubby-to-be as well - I quickly saw how much they clearly love eachother.  It's so beautiful to be a part of this magnificent day in their lives - it's an honour and a privilege!

So above is a picture of some mini cupcakes I did for her hens party - when I delivered the cupcakes I could see just how much her family adore her - as the house was decorated with so much fun and frivolity!  This Saturday is going to be a special, amazing day for all of them - I could sense the gorgeous energy building already!

I can't wait to bake for them this Saturday - it will be so so much fun!

Lots of love! Miss Lulu xo

Apple Crumble... Cake!

Our Apple Crumble Cupcake has been such a hit it's now morphed into cake form by popular demand...

For the uninitiated - our Apple Crumble Cake is a cinnamon sponge carved out to softly echo a pie crust and we've then stuffed it with our apple pie filling that's been spiced with cinnamon. Then to finish it off, we've soft-served the top with our vanilla bean dairy free cream and sprinkled it with a crunchy cinnamon crumble.  It's a mixture of textures from soft and yielding creaminess, crunchy crumble to tangy apple pie filling!  I love how the filling oozes out when you cut the cake open!

Our Apple Crumble cake is available in a mini version which can feed up to four people (or two very greedy people) or in 20cm which can feed between 8-10 people.  It's perfect for any occasion - tea parties, birthdays or family get togethers!

If you need it in a larger size - no problem at all - just pop us an email :)

You can order it online now :)

NEW YORK - Gluten & Dairy free PARADISE!!!!

My favourite NY discovery - Lula's Sweet Apothecary - Vegan, Dairy free, Gluten free Brownie Sundae

New York City.  Let me firstly say that you won't need to bring any provisions to survive in this city - all you have to bring is yourself.  Yes - you heard me right - from my personal experience with a gluten free & dairy free sensitive tummy - I didn't once have to bring out my rice cooker to make sure I had a warm meal and not once did I have to smile through a chokingly dry cracker as a sad excuse for lunch.

If anything - you will have to exercise control because your choices are abundant.  But if you're there for a limited amount of time - why deprive yourself?  Life is just too short.

Because I didn't want to gloss over things - and I know how much I personally enjoy reading, seeing pictures and dreaming about food I can possibly eat - I've given a post to each place... They're by no means an exhaustive list because there was only so much I could fit into my belly!  I hope it helps some of you out there who plan to one day visit the Big Apple xx

Hampton Chutney Co. in Soho was an unexpected and absolutely delicious find recommended by a New York local with a gluten free tummy.  They make fantastic dosas (thin, crispy, sourdough crepes made from rice) and uttapams (the same but in pancake form) that are ALL gluten free.

I regularly visited this place for lunch - it's hard to say no to something that is packed with so much goodness - I became addicted!

Walking into their outpost in Soho - the place is often regularly packed with people but with patience you will find that by the time you've waited for your order someone else will be leaving and you can take a seat amongst the crowd.

When I first received my order I was amazed by the footlong size and couldn't imagine finishing it - but the lightness of the crepe defied the sheer size of the dosa and I found myself finishing it without any problem (unless I have a seriously warped idea of portion sizes - which may be the case!)

Dosa with Grilled Portobello Mushrooms, Spinach, Roasted Onions & Avocado
In terms of cross contamination - they have sandwiches on their menu - but the dosas and uttapams are all prepared in a different area and since they're all gluten free there are no cross contamination issues.  They do have cheese in some of their dosas - but you can ask to have it removed - so if you have a dairy allergy as opposed to an intolerance it may not be the best idea for you.

A final note is I'm grateful for every sensitive tummy that I've met - what I've realised is that there is an abundant enthusiasm to share places that can cater for us.  We all want to share because we know it can get so difficult and disheartening.  I've had a few conversations with NY locals who have been nothing but generous and kind in offering their knowledge.

Which leads me to my final question - are there gluten free dosas in Sydney?  Can someone tell me because I'm craving one now!!

Blue Smoke

Before I begin - let me start by stopping any vegans from reading on - STOP STOP STOP! :) Blue Smoke is definitely not the sort of place you would like to visit. However having said that - if you're a vegetarian they have a special menu just for you. And nut free friends - this place has its own nut free menu!!!!!

The Blue Smoke Rib Sampler

If you've been craving an all American barbecue but have had to suppress this desire because you couldn't find anywhere safe to eat it then Blue Smoke is well worth visiting...

Both a relaxed restaurant and a jazz club famous for their pit barbecue - Mr Lulu and I headed to their Flatiron location and were excited to be presented with a gluten free menu. The first thing I explored when reading it was what might have dairy in it, and to be honest there were quite a few items and my heart started to panic a bit. But our knowledgable server said that it wouldn't be a problem and seamlessly pointed out what was safe for me to eat & admitted when he wasn't sure and would check to make sure.

So far, so good - I was beginning to settle in and get a handle on my usual first-time dinner nerves.

The other obvious thing we noticed from the other diners around us were the huge portions. Armed with that knowledge we ordered the Rib Sampler for two which gave us the chance to try a variety of flavours without ordering too much.

Were the fries gluten free? Sadly no - but because I couldn't eat their mashed potato alternative they went to the trouble of preparing special oven-baked sweet potato wedges that weren't even on the menu. I was pretty impressed by that effort.

We also ordered sautéed spinach and rather than using butter they used oil instead. And Mr Lulu ordered the macaroni and cheese which the waiter said was amazing (I tried to close my ears when she said that)...

The verdict? From first bite the ribs were lip-smackingly good. We preferred some styles over others but overall the meat just fell off the bone and the deep smokiness pervading all of the ribs really showed all the time & effort that went into their preparation. This is obviously the star item on their menu because everyone seemed to be eating ribs! Mr Lulu wasn't a fan of the macaroni and cheese saying it was a bit too rich for his taste (privately I was glad - because I didn't feel like I was missing out... Don't tell him I said that though!) but the spinach and sweet potato were comfortingly clean in flavour.

So if you want to experience a quintessential American barbecue experience, Blue Smoke will provide that for you and bless them for making the effort to provide it to as many people as possible.

Balthazar

Walking into Balthazar in Soho, my expectations were that I was probably going to enjoy a pot of peppermint tea whilst Mr Lulu enjoyed a few plates of gluten-laden, butter soaked delights for dinner. I was happy with this because we'd been traipsing all over the city sampling every gluten free whim of mine and his patience and encouragement was nothing short of incredible.

But Balthazar delivered one of the best dinners of all of my adventures - probably because it was so unexpected, but also because what I tasted was warm perfection in a mouthful!

Once we sat down and got the menus I looked through and wondered vaguely whether or not they would be able to cater for my sensitive tummy.

After Mr Lulu made his order the girl turned to me to ask if there was anything I wanted. I had spotted the duck confit, knowing it was traditionally cooked in its own duck fat... Was this gluten & dairy free by any chance? No pressure I said, just curious. With a smile the girl said that she would check and she added that she was sure they could find me something to eat.

Within a few minutes she returned confirming that in fact, yes it was fine for me to eat. However the potatoes would have to be cooked in oil rather than butter. Oh joy!!! Potatoes!!! Rather than saying they would be omitted, they were willing to alter them for me. Being denied the humble spud is one regular disappointment that I hate to endure.

Suddenly Mr Lulu's dinner became OUR dinner and the smiles between us were electric with excitement!

And so it came - and there it was in all it's glory... Both crunchy and so yieldingly tender on the inside, the duck confit was exemplary. Served with a fresh frisée salad, sautéed mushrooms and my holy grail potatoes - it was one of the most satisfying meals of my trip.

Whilst there is no clear allergen menu it's clear that Balthazar know their stuff - all you have to do is ask.

Balthazar is located at 80 Spring Street, New York

Risotteria

Risotteria was one place I had read about extensively but I got the impression that whilst they had dairy free options there wouldn't be many, so I relegated it to the back of my mind.  But upon speaking to a gluten and dairy free New York local who had nothing but enthusiasm for the place - I couldn't help but jump for joy!  In fact - on the very next day we made the special trip there to try it out...

Walking in - my first thought was for their breadsticks.  I had read about these famous breadsticks however the lady who served us said they had dry milk powder but put them on the table anyway for Mr Lulu - who said they were fantastic.  I myself was still happy when the lady said I couldn't have them - this showed me that they obviously know their stuff so I knew I was in for a great lunch, whether I was able to to have breadsticks of not!

The range of dairy free options was much larger than I thought it would be and I was instantly grateful that I had happened upon the gluten free dairy free tummy from New York - what I would have missed out on!  It must have been fate that I met her I decided...

For our appetizer - we first shared a delicious plate of prosciutto that was freshly cut.  Soft, salty and thin, the prosciutto sparked our appetite for more.

Then came the salad. Mr Lulu had a green salad whilst I had a salad of corn, beetroot & semi-roasted tomatoes.  Refreshing and substantial.

And finally came a pizza for Mr Lulu (made from gluten but there are gluten free options) and a chicken risotto for me.  The chicken risotto with peppers, mushrooms and parsley was comforting and clean in flavour and the perfect antidote for all of the naughtiness I had been consuming since my arrival in New York.

But for the purposes of research (of course) - I took away with me one of their baked treats - their Orio Cakester.  Soft chewy sponge sandwiched between an oreo-like cream filling - similar to a whoopie pie - it was a perfect mix of sweet richness.

I would most certainly recommend coming here - they have gluten free, dairy free and sugar free options on their menu

Risotteria is located on 270 Bleeker Street, b/w 6th & 7th Aves, New York
